Silver Comet “Hammerhead” ride to Anniston

This is called the “Hammerhead” Anniston ride because it is for faster cyclists.  This ride is not for inexperienced or casual cyclists.  This version is being catered to those who are athletic, fast and have endurance!   The average speed for cyclists on this ride should be at least 18 mph.  If you cannot average at least 18 mph, please do not sign up for this ride.

This  ride from Smyrna, Georgia to Anniston, Alabama on the Silver Comet/Chief Ladiga Trail is a 94 mile bike ride each day.   If you undertake this ride, you should only do so with the intent of riding the entire distance as there will be limited space on the SAG wagon and those seats are reserved for participants who might have  developed physical issues during the course of the ride or experience mechanical failures.
As with the classic ride you will travel the entire length of the Silver Comet Trail combined with the Chief Ladiga Trail as it is named on the Alabama side.  With sections of the trail having been recently repaved in Cobb County Georgia and around Piedmont, Alabama, the trail is a fairly smooth ride.  On the Silver Comet side we will travel through lovely Georgia farmland and over rolling hills.  The Silver Comet Trail ends 10 miles beyond Cedartown, Georgia.   From the state line the Chief Ladiga Trail is 33 miles long.  The beginning portion winds through the Talledega National Forest, one of the prettier and more isolated sections of the trail.  When combined these two trails make up the longest paved trail in America!
There will be a minimum of three stops along the way to refuel with snacks and beverages : Tara Drummond (@milepost 20.2), Cedartown, GA (@milepost 51.3)  Piedmont, AL (Chief Ladiga @MP 13.6-Mile 75 overall).   The stops have been planned to be minimal so that a fast pace can be maintained. There will be one ride leader on the road with you and two SAG vehicles assisting.
Upon arrival at the hotel you may swim in the pool (during pool season) and have the option of having a relaxing massage at poolside by massage therapists.  Note: For the Hammerhead ride the cost of the massage is included in the cost of the trip.
Dinner will be catered by the pool at our lodging in Anniston.  Scrumptious barbecue is generally the fare for dinner but special dietary requests can be made.  In addition to good old southern iced tea, beer and wine are also served with dinner to help you relax and get a good night’s sleep so you can ride back refreshed the next day
